It's time telecom giants stop gouging low-income Canadians! The CRTC needs to close the digital divide by ensuring low-income families have access to affordable high-speed internet. Canada has some of the highest internet costs in the world and lags behind many other countries with internet speeds. ACORN members need your support to make internet affordable for all Canadians living under the Low Income Measure.
By signing below I affirm that:
- Broadband access, like home telephone service, is essential for Canadians to get ahead.
- The CRTC must address barriers of access to home internet, including affordability. Everyone should have equal access to high speed internet, regardless of income.
- A home internet connection is necessary for important life activities, including looking for employment, completing homework, and accessing government services and forms.
- We need the Commission to mandate affordable access for all Canadians, with actual download speeds of at least 50 Mbps and 10 Mbps upload

Canada has some of the highest internet cost in the world and it shouldn’t because we are not a third world country without infrastructure in place. The infrastructure is in place, but competition is not.
There is talk yet again of ignoring review recommendations and imposing an additional 5% tax on the internet to support Canadian content in the new media. I say if Netflix wants to operate in Canada, make it part of the deal that they have to produce Canadian content in order to gain access to the Canadian market. Don’t make internet inaccessible to Canadians who don’t have the financial means to pay even more for internet.
In today’s world, home internet access is critical to survive in our modern environment. The poor are getting poorer and need affordable access to their own home internet. Lining up at the local library for a few minutes of internet access doesn’t cut it. We need to be able to access when circumstances demand. We need to have enough bandwidth, and be able to afford it. Isolated communities need it desperately as it is their only link to the rest of the country, indigenous communities especially.
It’s a new world and the internet providers will do just fine if the rates are affordable to every Canadian, because there will be more customers.
Don’t let the telecom companies continue to gouge us. Make fast, reasonable bandwidth affordable to everybody.
